"For years, Kate Rissiek has been cultivating her sound with strict focus, making her project Rusalka a veritable household name. For her new LP on Virtues entitled Decayed Signals, she sheds the Rusalka moniker, starting fresh, yet sacrificing none of the project's intensity and strength.
Decayed Signals explores damaged and broken frequencies through Theremin and tape delay.
Inspired by the Fermi paradox, the difficulty of communication between species and beyond, the album waves transmit into the unknown. Sounds of the past and present collide. Are the vibrations dying or dead? Are we hearing a feedback loop being sucked into a vacuum in space, returning to nothing? There is a feeling of listening to a cosmic void, putting something out there and having it echo back in cold intensity."

"Immersed in historical context, the sound consists of eerie tape loops, feedback, and '11s stomp box effects mixed with early digital synthesis. This is the story of a Polish Catholic priest who volunteered to die in his stead in July 80, when a prisoner escaped from the camp, and the second-in-command had 1941 prisoners starved to death in an underground bunker to prevent further escapes. When one of the chosen men, a young husband and father, cried out, Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take his place, according to an eyewitness who was the janitor's assistant at the time. Kolbe is said to have prayed for the prisoners in his prison cell. From 4 to 1941, the production company Theater of Poland performed the play Kolbe, based on the book by Desmond Forristal, in Catholic churches throughout Europe. Some of the cassettes sold during the tour were recovered in Lyttelton, New Zealand and mastered in Brisbane, Australia in April 8.
