Castles In Space:

""“Contagion Vapors” was recorded between May 2020 and March 2021, in tandem with “Transgressive Transmissions”. Both albums have been released by Castles in Space, however they feature completely different sonic energies.

Caught up in the first wave of pandemic doom/gloom which resulted in a bizarre creative bloom for Patrick, both albums have unique sounds anchored in the mighty Patrick R Pärk/Kösmonaut discographies. This one is definitely a Kösmonaut record, however.

Patrick's ”Contagion Vapors” is a chilled out vaporwave sonic adventure which soothes the worn soul like an icy balm with its motorik repetitions and sonic patterns and swirls.

Uncharacteristically upbeat and always positive, the album was a personal exercise in not becoming consumed by COVID isolation and misery.

Major influences were Patrick Cowley, Cybotron, Automat, Cluster, and Harmonia and the entire album was recorded / mixed in the midnight witching hours over the course of only 2-3 days.

Ever prolific, Patrick is currently deep diving hard into post Y2K New Age conjurations with his massive Galactic Mirage project which should see another CD box set later this year. There's also some forthcoming Teeth Of Glass vinyl coming from Library Of the Occult later this year and plenty of Patrick's self released "chrome sonic babies" in between.

I spent a lot of time experimenting with sequencing and different bits of hardware I'd acquired. I was also playing around with an old four track cassette recorder, which was loads of fun. I think the end result feels a little broader in sound and composition as all but one of these tracks were the result of recording a live jam down to a stereo mix. I recorded dozens of these until I'd found 'the one'.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThat way of capturing a performance really excites me, it's like a crystallised moment in time when the planets have aligned. When you're really absorbed into the flow of it and there's something extra guiding you.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThematically, it all reflects this ongoing interest I have in consciousnesses, spiritual enlightenment, truth realisation, whatever you want to call it. At the time I'd been reading a lot about advaita, which is Sanskrit for 'not two', or what western spiritual teachers call non-duality, where it's seen there is no separation between anything, no individual self, no subject and object, just this infinite eternal consciousness. I read a few of the classic\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e teachings from gurus such as Ramaana Maharishi, Jiddu Krishnamurti and Nisargadatta Maharaj, which reflect modern accounts of contemporary teachers like Richard Rose, Jan, Frazier and Rupert Spira.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThere seems to be this slow reconciliation between ancient eastern spiritual teachings and western psychology and neuroscience. I had taken to going for long walks between six and seven o’clock in the morning. I would stroll aimlessly and directionless up and down terraced streets, along the beach and on the prom.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eOn these early morning walks, places that were once very familiar to me seemed to have changed and taken on an unfamiliar feel. With this change I noticed new things, things which I had not seen before or maybe had no memory of ever seeing.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“One morning I passed an old pub. Hanging in the beer garden was some very old and quite shabby looking bunting. As I stared at the faded old colours I started to wonder why the bunting was there? Was it put up to mark a long forgotten occasion? Or had it been placed there to just brighten up the garden? As the weeks went by, I started to wander further and every now and then would notice more random old tatty bunting hanging from trees, lamp posts or in windows. On theses walks an idea started to take root. I came up with and really liked the phrase Sad Old Tatty Bunting. I mentioned this to my friend Douglas E Powell who said it sounded like the name of an old scarecrow (Tatty Bunting) it was then that I realised that Sad Old Tatty Bunting could refer to many different concepts\/ideas\/places\/books and things. What, who or even where was Sad Old Tatty Bunting?
