They were brought to life for this unique project and its members are; Bridget Hayden, Mary Stark, Sam McLoughlin and David Chatton Barker.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe score was largely made ahead of the film, as Kain Leo prefers to work with the music during her editing process. The first stage of writing the score saw the band collect together old folk custom sheet music and cut sections out and re-paste to create new passages. These were first played using whistle and percussion. The Root Folk Band split the recording between two locations, the first; an ex-telephone repeater station high up on Shap Fell, Cumbria and the second; at a house in Cornholme, West Yorkshire. These sessions incorporated improvisation alongside the original music drawn from the cut-up traditional scores.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAround 3 hours of material was recorded, played on a variety of traditional and self-built instruments. They were brought to life for this unique project and its members are; Bridget Hayden, Mary Stark, Sam McLoughlin and David Chatton Barker.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe score was largely made ahead of the film, as Kain Leo prefers to work with the music during her editing process. The first stage of writing the score saw the band collect together old folk custom sheet music and cut sections out and re-paste to create new passages. These were first played using whistle and percussion. The Root Folk Band split the recording between two locations, the first; an ex-telephone repeater station high up on Shap Fell, Cumbria and the second; at a house in Cornholme, West Yorkshire. These sessions incorporated improvisation alongside the original music drawn from the cut-up traditional scores.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAround 3 hours of material was recorded, played on a variety of traditional and self-built instruments. Many aspects of the traditional folk culture of the time were on the verge of disappearing. The photographer Charles Géniaux (1870-1931), was keen to document these traditions. To this end, in 1899, Géniaux wrote an article for The Wide World Magazine about a witch who lived in the picturesque town of Rochefort-en-Terre, situated in the south of Brittany. The article, entitled Naia, the Witch of Rochefort, describes Géniaux’s meetings with Naia in the\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e ruins of the Château de Rieux, as well as his conversations with various locals who had encountered her over the years. According to these locals, we learn that Naia “travels on a broom through the air—or maybe underground—when she does not want to be seen going on her errands; that she fears neither fire nor water, disappears when she likes, and takes any shape that may suit her purpose.” Furthermore, Naia is capable of “picking up red hot coals, which she crushed with her fingers and scattered to the winds.” She also tells Géniaux of Gnami, a powerful spirit who lives through her and obeys her every command. According to these locals, we learn that Naia “travels on a broom through the air—or maybe underground—when she does not want to be seen going on her errands; that she fears neither fire nor water, disappears when she likes, and takes any shape that may suit her purpose.” Furthermore, Naia is capable of “picking up red hot coals, which she crushed with her fingers and scattered to the winds.” She also tells Géniaux of Gnami, a powerful spirit who lives through her and obeys her every command. These recordings have been captured during a performance installation in the chapel, alongside experimental explorations in the studio.
