Whether creating lo-fi soundscapes with Andrew Thomas (Feeling Flying), pastoral IDM in the late 90s style (Aspen), or outsider ambient techno (Signer), he seems to be everywhere at once (we’re not even gonna get into the numerous rock\/pop collaborations). But Smith is also an aggressively non-promotional artist, so even though he’s released music on labels like Carpark, Type, and Sub Pop, you’d be forgiven for never having heard of him. Regionally isolated in New Zealand, and largely unconcerned with the self-promotional duties required by the contemporary creative economy, he seems to be operating largely on his own terms. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn the fall of 2020, with Covid lockdown in full swing, Smith began to enact a unique personal ritual. Every night he would listen to a single experimental jazz album from the 70s in its entirety before creating music of his own on a single device (the Synthstrom Deluge). These recordings, which he dubbed ‘Isolated Dreams,’ then began to appear without notification or fanfare on the artist’s Bandcamp page - the first appearing in October of 2020, and the most recent (as of this writing) in February of 2024 (Volume 23). The music here is simple\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e and direct; wavering synth lines draped over a series of repeating rhythms, with occasional micro-changes in texture and timbre, all of it recorded in real time and refreshingly loose in terms of arrangement and production gloss. As covid raged through 2020-21 and opportunities for live performance became increasingly scarce, the group steadfastly continued to meet weekly for its extended studio improv sessions, all of which were captured on tape. Parameters were simple; as soon as a key was chosen and the record button pressed, there was no turning back. Improvisations would often last late into the night, sometimes splintering into multiple variations on a theme, the three ensemble members responding to one another’s musical cues with the practiced ease that can only come from years of close collaboration.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e'Acedia Phase' is a snapshot of those sessions; a vital document of the V Vecker Ensemble at the peak of its powers, and a beautifully heavy slab of ambient music. On 'Atonement', the drifting polysynths of David Rogers and Luke Rogers Requena set the scene; a temple of shadows into which V Vecker’s saxophone glides like a restless ghost. 'Cold Storage' sees icy washes of texture slowly give way to shimmering organ tones and the dark cycling modulations of\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e 'Torpor', while 'Contours of Wear' drops us deep into a world of unexpected warmth and light. Closing the album at nearly fourteen minutes long, the title track revisits the crystalline notes of 'Cold Storage' before expanding outward on waves of saxophone into the furthest reaches of kosmische oblivion. As covid raged through 2020-21 and opportunities for live performance became increasingly scarce, the group steadfastly continued to meet weekly for its extended studio improv sessions, all of which were captured on tape. Parameters were simple; as soon as a key was chosen and the record button pressed, there was no turning back. Improvisations would often last late into the night, sometimes splintering into multiple variations on a theme, the three ensemble members responding to one another’s musical cues with the practiced ease that can only come from years of close collaboration.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e'Acedia Phase' is a snapshot of those sessions; a vital document of the V Vecker Ensemble at the peak of its powers, and a beautifully heavy slab of ambient music. 'Nuit jaune' is her debut EP (released digitally on Kinnta records in 2018) and we love it so much that we broke our regional mandate and reached out to ask if she’d be interested in a limited cassette release. Not only did she agree, but in talking with Frederique and her partner Christian Richer (Element Kuuda), we discovered a world of shared interests and inspirations, in particular a fondness for 70s punk, DIY instruments, woodworking, library music, and an ongoing admiration for the work of the late Norm Chambers.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eRecorded during the heatwave of 2018, 'Nuit jaune' is a fittingly hazy collection of synth miniatures, reminiscent at times of Tangerine Dream, Cluster, and of course, Panabrite. What sets it apart is the gentle assuredness of Duval’s arrangements and playing. Tracks like 'Cyclique' and 'Ptero' unfold leisurely, spreading out slowly into waves of synthetic delight. On 'Pulmo', a lone synth voice croons gently to itself like a lowing calf, while 'Sismographe' follows a gentle arpeggio deep into a forest of 70s string machines. Where Vol I showcased a wide variety of vintage programs, Vol II sees Roos narrowing his focus down to two of his personal favorites: Laurie Spiegel’s 'Music Mouse' and Frank Balde’s 'Diablo.'\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eOne of the first ‘intelligent instruments’ ever created for the personal computer, Speigel’s 'Music Mouse' was, for many people in the 1980s, a remarkably intuitive introduction to the world of MIDI sequencing. Mouse position controls the placement and parameters of MIDI data, allowing the user to quickly select and alter the scale, chord voicing and volume of their work on the fly. The keyboard is used as a control panel, with various shortcuts outlined on a digital ‘cheat sheet’ provided with the software. While the program is limited to outputting four separate MIDI notes (which can then be ordered into short musical phrases or loops) within these constraints lies an enormous capacity for musical variation and complexity. Roos plays the software with a light touch, maintaining a delicate balance between playfulness and\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e precision.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFrank Balde’s 'Diablo' allows for MIDI data to be literally ‘drawn’ into a window very similar to early digital paint programs like MacPaint. The user can then record the data into loops, alter the note parameters (tonality, duration, velocity, tempo, etc), and capture ‘snapshots’ of their settings that can then be clicked between in real time. The program is limited to three separate loops at a time, but like Music Mouse, its limitations conceal a surprisingly powerful tool for musical expression. Beginning with the quasi-spiritual immersion of 'Shadows Wake', the album proceeds leisurely through a series of changing environments, the lush mellotron fields of 'Lester' giving way to the Morriconesque desert of 'This Too Shall Pass' and slowly dimming ocean of 'Sunset Over Avalon'. On 'Basho', what sounds like the ghost of legendary American guitarist Robbie Basho moves briefly across the face of the waters. What arrived was a deeply personal concept album that surpassed our expectations and expanded our admiration for Freeman as an artist and musician. Like its predecessor, Sparrowing is built on a foundation of fragile acoustic guitar motifs that follow one after another like melodic haikus. But woven over top these familiar elements is an ethereal ensemble of electronic choirs, arpeggios and vocal samples that sound like nothing the artist has done before. The result is an album that feels intensely private and hermetic - like a series of lo-fi sacred hymns to the natural world.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe album's title is a reference to the song of the White Throated Sparrow, a bird that recently changed its song for the first time in known history. Like its predecessor, Sparrowing is built on a foundation of fragile acoustic guitar motifs that follow one after another like melodic haikus. But woven over top these familiar elements is an ethereal ensemble of electronic choirs, arpeggios and vocal samples that sound like nothing the artist has done before.
