Standard Grey, 27 February 2023:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"As of this writing, I’ve called Nara, Japan home for almost 12 years. Nara was the capital of Japan 1300-odd years ago. Before Tokyo, before Kyoto, the Nara Period was a short, but essential era in the foundation of the country. The history here is deep. Fast-forward a millennium and change, the winding backstreets in parts of the city and its outer surroundings retain an ancient atmosphere. It’s a wanderer’s paradise with countless temples, shrines, rural roads and ancient trails leading into the mountains. There is a mysterious undercurrent to this place, a long reverberation in the landscape. After 12 years here, I know that I’ve barely scratched the surface. When I pack my recording bag and head out on a ride or ramble, there is always the feeling that with the proper attention, something interesting might reveal itself around any corner. And it usually does.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eMy dictionary defines “peregrination” as : a journey, especially a long or meandering one, usually made on foot- often with an element of pilgrimage. It seemed like a fitting title, since this album was made during an extended period of exploration on foot and by bicycle around Nara and its temples, shrines and trails, before and during the current plague times. What some might call ghosts. Modern science has no way of explaining these apparitions, casting doubt on the authenticity of the experience. Other researchers have propounded the idea that these places may hold memories of past occurrences, and that under certain circumstances, these memories can be re-animated. This idea is sometimes referred to as the “stone tape theory”, and has featured in a few old books and even a British TV show. To this day no one knows what these sightings or hearings represent, if they are in fact genuine, and hard evidence is nonexistent. To add to the confusion, it’s relatively easy these days to fake a convincing ghost encounter on audio or video, so even if there were evidence it may have been faked.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOne wonders if modern day ghost hunters would find anything at the sites featured here.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI have a friend who takes photographs without looking at what he’s taking a photo of. Most of them are very interesting, harboring images of faces and weird clouds of light. In the same house where he took a lot of these photos, I made a floor rubbing which\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eproduced a collage of contorted faces. Are these just incidences of pareidolia, or is some other mechanism at play? This was an old plantation house which was said to be haunted, and I and another friend did see some odd things there. I don’t know if those things could’ve been recorded in any way.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI think the pitfall in the “paranormal” viewpoint is it’s insistence on our technology’s ability to detect something, which is then used to support the viewer’s ideas. Thinking of these occurrences as “recordings” might be the wrong way to look at them. A misapplied frame of reference. What if the truth is much weirder than that?\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eVoices can be heard on registro de piedra, most of which I put there. At times it seems that voices I did not put there are heard. I believe this to be a case of audio pareidolia, brought about by the similarity in timbre and rhythm of the sounds to human speech. The layering of these sounds seems to have amplified the effect, conjuring up conversations we can’t quite hear, in a language we do not understand.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI find it extremely funny that these are exactly the kind of sounds I had thought about as I began working on this project. In retrospect, not all that surprising though. I’m reasonably sure that I haven’t recorded any ghost voices here. At times it seems that voices I did not put there are heard. I believe this to be a case of audio pareidolia, brought about by the similarity in timbre and rhythm of the sounds to human speech. The layering of these sounds seems to have amplified the effect, conjuring up conversations we can’t quite hear, in a language we do not understand.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI find it extremely funny that these are exactly the kind of sounds I had thought about as I began working on this project. Recording these sounds through the surfaces and materials of the restricting structures I hoped to retain some of the energy passing through them.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThen in a process of self-reference, I played the recordings back through the materials, documenting the results, and repeated this process a number of times. The sounds became more tonal and some frequencies were enhanced, just as others dissipated. Recording both directly from the surfaces of the materials and extremely close to them, I hoped to capture the vibrations passing through the structures but also the air in close proximity to their surfaces. This dialogue prompted an exchange of recordings, found sounds and other sonic material, advancing two pieces. Artistically, Bruno perceives himself as a pessimist acknowledging the presence of this thinking in his abundant music production, which is mainly collaborative. However, David perceives Bruno’s prolific creation and cooperation with other artists as evidence of optimism or at least as an act of resisting pessimism. For both artists, when new artwork is brought forth in the world, it embodies new ideas encouraging experiences and reflections with a potential agency in the same way that the vibration of a tiny drop of water echoes on the place where it falls. In his continuous music production, Bruno detects a necessity; and David connects his own artistic creation with contesting the moment of despair we experience and its effects on our emotional health. In both stances, there is an element of self-care in music making, which in the case of this collaboration is mutual care. This is a collaborative CD released in April 2023 by French drone artist Bruno Duplant, who is familiar to us, and Colombian sound artist/Dr. David Vélez on the experimental label Unfathomless in Brussels, Belgium, in a limited edition of 4 copies.Contains two deep drone songs mixed with field recordings.Below is an explanation by the author himself. "This project began with a conversation between Bruno and David about making music in times of social and environmental crisis. This conversation led to an exchange of recordings, found sounds, and other sonic materials. As an artist, Bruno considers himself to be a pessimist and finds this mindset present in his rich, largely collaborative music production. But David sees Bruno's prolific output and collaborations with other artists as evidence of optimism, or at least an act of resistance to pessimism.For both artists, new artwork is When it is released into the world, it has the potential to influence new ideas, experiences, and reflections, much like the vibrations of a small drop of water that reverberate where it lands.Bruno continues to make music. Seeing the need for this, David connects his artistic creation with challenging the moments of despair we experience and the impact this has on our emotional well-being. This Latin phrase, pictorial and poetic, most often attributed to Virgil, refers to the moths that circle around the candle before burning themselves, and which means: “We go around in circles in the night and we are devoured by fire “. It is also, much closer to us, a French film directed by Guy Debord in 1978. The film (lasting 95 min) describes the consumer society and capitalist alienation, applying to highlight the condition of modern slaves. Today even more this Latin expression takes on a new meaning with the phenomena of ultra-liberalism and major climate crisis. Man, like moths, burns his wings on the fires he himself lit and continues to maintain despite warnings and threats.
