"Born in 1938 in Queenstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa, Pat Matshikiza grew up in a musical family. His uncle, Todd Matshikiza, was a jazz columnist for drum magazines in the 1950s. Pat was educated at St. Matthews, a historic mission school in Keiskamahawk, where he played the organ. Performing and graduating with a teaching diploma, he moved to Johannesburg in 1958 and joined a community of professional black musicians centered around Dokei House, the headquarters of the Union Artists and African Music and Drama Society. Here, Pat Matshikiza joined the Jazz Dazzlers, a big band led by esteemed saxophonist Mackay Davache, as pianist, and later played with the Malombo Jazz Man at the Castle Lager Jazz Festival in 1962. He was part of the winning group, the Early Mabuza Quartet, including Pat Matshikiza, who recorded for the As-Shams/The Sun label in the 1964s, and Tshona, a 1970 collaboration album with sax giant Kippy Moeketsi! The album was followed by Pat's solo debut Sikiza Matshikza, featuring Moeketsi as a featured artist, in 1975. The members of this album were from the early days of the group that would become Spirits Rejoice in 1976. With Duke Makashi on tenor sax, George Taifmani on trumpet, Sifo Gumede on bass, Gilbert Matthews on drums, and Sandile Shange on guitar (pictured alongside Pat Matshikiza in the album cover photo). In the 1977s, Pat Matshikiza retired from the jazz scene in order to earn a more steady income as a resident pianist on the hotel circuit, but revived his jazz career in the 1980s, playing clubs and gigs in Johannesburg. Comes with DL code.It's a white board.Below is an explanation by the label. "This album consists of 12 ambient pieces for guitar. It follows 12's debut Nowhere, Middle Of and is built around generative synths. The same thing. I don't want to repeat myself, Dawson completely abandons the synthesizer as the main instrument on Music For Listening, and as a result the guitar songs lean heavily towards tape loops and manipulations, accompanied by field recordings and understated piano elements. The music sits at the intersection of composition, improvisation and chance, with patiently simple melodies that emerge and repeat like mantras throughout the album.Dawson's inspiration came from a phone call with his 2020-year-old grandmother. His grandmother told him of his observations of birds outside the window, as Dawson had done since he was a child. It made me want to dig up what I had recorded over the summer, and these fragments were originally going to be part of an album of Prairie Bird Songs. We roamed pastures and farmlands and recorded audio—a true field recording—but Dawson abandoned the project because of the hissing and crackling sounds of mosquitoes and insects swarming the microphone. But listening back many years after that call, he was struck by the similarity of these recordings to the music he would compose. While the recording was playing, he wanted to pick up his guitar and play, and in that moment Dawson let go of the album he had been immersed in.

Mouse position controls the placement and parameters of MIDI data, allowing the user to quickly select and alter the scale, chord voicing and volume of their work on the fly. The keyboard is used as a control panel, with various shortcuts outlined on a digital ‘cheat sheet’ provided with the software. While the program is limited to outputting four separate MIDI notes (which can then be ordered into short musical phrases or loops) within these constraints lies an enormous capacity for musical variation and complexity. The user can then record the data into loops, alter the note parameters (tonality, duration, velocity, tempo, etc), and capture ‘snapshots’ of their settings that can then be clicked between in real time. The program is limited to three separate loops at a time, but like Music Mouse, its limitations conceal a surprisingly powerful tool for musical expression. Both musicians compliment each other stylistically and add sparks to their newest project, Vanity Mirror. Their debut LP, PUFF was written, recorded, performed, produced and even mixed by Brent Randall. The resulting album starts where their other project Electric Looking Glass leaves off, with hummable, dreamy pop that branches out into more intimate, less genre specific freeform songcraft. It is a nostalgic collection of songs pieced together in makeshift spaces while traveling between LA, Montreal, Detroit and Toronto. Taping old pianos in public libraries and abandoned houses and tracking vocals in vintage shop basements, Randall sent the tracks to Toomey who recorded drums and percussion in his Los Angeles basement using a handheld field recorder. Although ‘cosmic’ has become catchall descriptor in both country and ambient music, Dawson reaches for something more earthly. Something more grounded. Ribboning miles of pedal steel nestle into hushed tones and gossamer textures. Reflecting on the process he states, “It took some time to find myself in it. The first few pieces I made were embarrassingly twangy. I love spaghetti and I love western but never the two shall twain.” Instead, Dawson began to experiment with alternate tunings and granular guitar. He recorded and mixed a full album, and then called upon a handful of friends and kindred peers to improvise on top of it. Treating their contributions like found sounds or samples he stole little moments, manipulated passages, and dismantled his original recordings in the process.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003ePerhaps it’s not surprising that Dawson was drawn in a country-adjacent direction, he literally grew up adjacent\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e to country. His childhood home was a block from the rodeo grounds in a town where everyone wore cowboy boots to weddings and funerals. Throughout the album he draws from memories of his youth, like time spent on the family farm where John Wayne movies played on an endless loop and a velvet painting of an outlaw with an eyepatch hung above the television.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFind Yourself Lost marks the first time Dawson has been joined by other musicians. There’s a joy to be found in responding to someone else’s creativity or ensuring that your ideas serve the greater good.” Dawson notes, “With my own material I’ve been more selfish. Every song is a love note to myself. They are reminders to practice patience, to allow space for growth, to embrace imperfection, and to always remain open to change. But I’d neglected an incredibly important sentiment... Ribboning miles of pedal steel nestle into hushed tones and gossamer textures. Reflecting on the process he states, “It took some time to find myself in it. The first few pieces I made were embarrassingly twangy. I love spaghetti and I love western but never the two shall twain.” Instead, Dawson began to experiment with alternate tunings and granular guitar. He recorded and mixed a full album, and then called upon a handful of friends and kindred peers to improvise on top of it. There’s a joy to be found in responding to someone else’s creativity or ensuring that your ideas serve the greater good.” Dawson notes, “With my own material I’ve been more selfish. Every song is a love note to myself. They are reminders to practice patience, to allow space for growth, to embrace imperfection, and to always remain open to change.
