A drunken moment in a piss-soaked Brooklyn bar bathroom led to the idea for lead single \"Call Your Mom\"—a song that beautifully articulates the modern struggle to keep in touch with those who matter to us most. Slightly twisted takes on Kosmische musik, worldbeat, and art pop can be found scattered across the Art Feynman discography, but with Be Good The Crazy Boys, Temple fully immerses himself into pools of collective madness.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAfter living in NYC for two decades, Luke Temple moved to a rural part of Northern California for six years in which the first two Art Feynman records were made. It served as a needed decompression. Due to some unexpected life changes, Temple moved to Los Angeles spawning a flurry of writing and wanted to play the new music live. Temple booked a residency at the Permanent Records Roadhouse which went better than expected and made very clear the music needed to be recorded.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eUnlike the first two Art Feynman albums, Be Good The Crazy Boys was recorded live in-studio with a full band. The result captures a spirit of restless anxiety, and recalls the most frenetic work by Talking Heads, or Oingo Boingo at their darkest. \"Sonically, I was inspired by records that were recorded at the late Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas such as Grace Jones' ‘Private\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e Life,’ Lizzy Mercier Descloux's Mambo Nassau, and Talking Heads' Remain in Light.\" Despite these callbacks, Be Good The Crazy Boys remains firmly rooted in modern concerns, with songs about fearing the end of the world and struggling with FOMO — narratives that would be relatable if they didn’t sound so completely unhinged.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWith Be Good The Crazy Boys, Art Feynman proves to be more than just a character. He represents the part of the modern, collective consciousness that’s struggling to maintain balance in a toxic, chaotic world. In less skilled hands, that concept could result in a very somber listen. Fortunately, when Art Feynman gets his hands on the chaos of the modern age, it simply makes you want to dance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“To me,” Temple explains, “there was a lot of energy that needed to be released as the result of living in isolation for six years. It also seems to speak to a general anxiety we’re all holding, but it’s expressed in a cathartic way.” It’s this acknowledgement of general anxiety that separates Feynman from the other fictional personas that have been cropping up in the music world lately. It served as a needed decompression. Due to some unexpected life changes, Temple moved to Los Angeles spawning a flurry of writing and wanted to play the new music live. Temple booked a residency at the Permanent Records Roadhouse which went better than expected and made very clear the music needed to be recorded.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eUnlike the first two Art Feynman albums, Be Good The Crazy Boys was recorded live in-studio with a full band. But the production also purposefully maintains space around Webber’s singular voice as she sings of loss, time, and romantic warfare like some kind of cosmic Stevie Nicks. The epic scope becomes instantly apparent on opener “Wrecked,” a song Webber says is about “self-destructing with a hope of landing on my feet,” and which kicks off with nearly a dozen bass tracks that overlap and stumble over each other before locking into a tight homage to “Driver’s Seat.” The first words you hear are her promise “I’m gonna wreck my mind but I’ll get it back in line,” her remarkable vocal performance laden with expertly-crafted harmonies and instant sing-along appeal. The band shifts gears on the lead single “Run,” a propulsive anthem that’s somehow arena-ready and devastatingly intimate all at once. “Hold me under, I’m on my own and numb,” Webber sings, as the track explodes into a dramatic bridge dripping with bombastic synth pads and electric guitar.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Rapids and Rivers” and the stunning “Different War” take an even more confessional tone, and are both so personal that Webber couldn’t bear to revisit them until a year after the demos were recorded. “They were both written as a form of therapy,” she explains, though her songwriting process is generally more conduit-like and less intentionally therapeutic. “But I began to think that they were a crucial part of the album’s story.” Wells’ masterful production and arrangement skills take center stage on songs like the multi-part “Feel That,” which–as one of the few tracks on Nostalgia Killer that isn’t entirely performed by him and Webber–boasts a thrilling orchestral section performed by Meredith Bates and electric guitar from Rob Butterfield (a Lightning Dust touring member). Not the band, but Amber Webber and Joshua Wells–the couple at the core of it–ended their longtime relationship. In the wake of the split, the two musicians realized that Lightning Dust was still important to them and decided to stay together as an artistic partnership. The experience made them think about nostalgia as a concept and how this sort of longing for the past can be destructive, cancerous, useless. Webber and Wells reconvened virtually in mid-2020 to work together again as creative comrades, sharing some new ideas by correspondence, stitching together their song fragments into the dramatic arrangements now heard across Lightning Dust’s forthcoming new album, Nostalgia Killer.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eNostalgia Killer. The title couldn’t set a more perfect expectation for what the album holds. Hearing those words together, one might anticipate something harder, more chilly and severe. But what happens is quite the opposite: listeners find themselves wandering into someplace warm, guided by familiar sounds and voices. Little do they know they’ll soon be flung into a climate unknown. But the production also purposefully maintains space around Webber’s singular voice as she sings of loss, time, and romantic warfare like some kind of cosmic Stevie Nicks. The epic scope becomes instantly apparent on opener “Wrecked,” a song Webber says is about “self-destructing with a hope of landing on my feet,” and which kicks off with nearly a dozen bass tracks that overlap and stumble over each other before locking into a tight homage to “Driver’s Seat.” The first words you hear are her promise “I’m gonna wreck my mind but I’ll get it back in line,” her remarkable vocal performance laden with expertly-crafted harmonies and instant sing-along appeal. The band shifts gears on the lead single “Run,” a propulsive anthem that’s somehow arena-ready and devastatingly intimate all at once. “Hold me under, I’m on my own and numb,” Webber sings, as the track explodes into a dramatic bridge dripping with bombastic synth pads and electric guitar.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Rapids and Rivers” and the stunning “Different War” take an even more confessional tone, and are both so personal that Webber couldn’t bear to revisit them until a year after the demos were recorded. “They were both written as a form of therapy,” she explains, though her songwriting process is generally more conduit-like and less intentionally therapeutic. “But I began to think that they were a crucial part of the album’s story.” Wells’ masterful production and arrangement skills take center stage on songs like the multi-part “Feel That,” which–as one of the few tracks on Nostalgia Killer that isn’t entirely performed by him and Webber–boasts a thrilling orchestral section performed by Meredith Bates and electric guitar from Rob Butterfield (a Lightning Dust touring member). The closing track “Shadows of Verona” guides the listener into an entirely different realm, a sacred space born from a meditative piano piece of Wells and transformed into something dark but uplifting by Webber’s chant-like vocals and a droning organ.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAcross Nostalgia Killer, Lighting Dust introduces a sound that feels vaguely familiar while forming a mythology all of their own. Although this exact work may not have been created if it wasn’t for the duo’s separation, it would be wrong to simply call it a break-up album. The songs here don’t merely travel that well-trod landscape, they reinvent the scene altogether; after all, sometimes love needs reinventing. Nostalgia Killer is about something that affects us all, which is how we make sense of the world and each other over time and across borders. It’s as wild as the wind, yet eternally predictable in its inevitability. It is linear in part, but infinite in its circuitry. Our lives just punctuate it.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eSo perhaps it’s fitting that Labyrinth begins with an account of the artist on the road. “Driving west at night” she sings on the curtain-raiser \"As I Left,\" “Getting darker at the same time\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e it’s getting light.” This vignette of Broderick escaping the approach of dawn sets the stage for the rest of the album, a collection of beautifully-sung tone poems that pulse with elements of trip hop, true-to-life songcraft, and occasional peaks of electro-pop grandeur. The songs are also among her most spare to date, reflecting a natural, conscious progression towards being more exposed in her music, with her honeyed vocals upfront and the songs’ essence immediate to listeners.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBroderick began crafting Labyrinth in March 2020, when most forms of movement were brought to a screeching halt. The Maine-born, Los Angeles-based songwriter — who, in addition to her work as a solo musician, built a life playing and touring with acts such as Sharon Van Etten, Beth Orton, Damien Jurado, and Efterklang — was suddenly forced off the road for the first time in her career. She used this disruption as an opportunity to pare down her creation process and construct the scaffolding for Labyrinth in her apartment. Employing only the most crucial tools at her disposal, Broderick found herself opening different artistic doors as she focused on sharpening her recording skills, capturing the majority of the album on her own before finishing the remainder with co-producer D. James Goodwin.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis new DIY approach is evident on tracks like “As I Left,” a stripped-down ballad that sees Broderick contemplating the illusory nature of place and memory when one is constantly traveling. In other moments, her rabbit-from-a-hat essentialism results in songs that feel huge despite their sparse palette; “Crashing Against the Sun” may be the most stadium-ready she has ever sounded, complete with romantic synth-lines, splashing arena drums, and a wide sense of sonic-framing. On the richly-produced “I Want To Go,” Broderick employs a Tricky-esque beat and stabs of distortion as she describes the restless quality of her dreams and a longing to return to the natural world. Her lyrics feel almost venomous on the piano and bass-led “Wherever I Go,” in which she describes an empire “...where the dry land cracks beneath the asphalt...and the colonies of supple grubs fill them up one by one.”\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDespite the evocative, often gorgeous songwriting, it’s clear that Broderick isn’t here to comfort or assuage; she’s a painter depicting a landscape, an observant traveler through realms of memory and thought. This becomes particularly apparent on lead single “Blood Run Through Me,” with its skeletal beat and neon-cloaked bassline helping to build the song to soaring, chill-inducing heights. Goodwin and singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan join Broderick on vocals, providing a brief moment of camaraderie and unity, even as the lyrics describe how “we're tapped out \/ too much reaching for each other’s lives.” A stillness fills the air on stunning closer “What Does Love Care,\" in which Broderick wakes but stays in bed one morning, listening to birdsong and observing the sunlight. Her mind wanders as she imagines the end of the anthropocene, when “the greens are greener than we’ve ever seen.” She contemplates “how happy the bottom dwellers must be \/ less heavy feet and fewer ships on the sea” amid a landscape of organ and restrained reverberating drums, before asking flatly “it’s all about love, and what does love need?” She answers a moment later, the final words heard on the album: “It doesn’t take much to water the seed.”\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFor all of Broderick’s sage lyricism and vocal authority, Labyrinth never provides the listener with any easy answers. She used this disruption as an opportunity to pare down her creation process and construct the scaffolding for Labyrinth in her apartment. Employing only the most crucial tools at her disposal, Broderick found herself opening different artistic doors as she focused on sharpening her recording skills, capturing the majority of the album on her own before finishing the remainder with co-producer D. On the richly-produced “I Want To Go,” Broderick employs a Tricky-esque beat and stabs of distortion as she describes the restless quality of her dreams and a longing to return to the natural world. This becomes particularly apparent on lead single “Blood Run Through Me,” with its skeletal beat and neon-cloaked bassline helping to build the song to soaring, chill-inducing heights. Goodwin and singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan join Broderick on vocals, providing a brief moment of camaraderie and unity, even as the lyrics describe how “we're tapped out \/ too much reaching for each other’s lives.” A stillness fills the air on stunning closer “What Does Love Care,\" in which Broderick wakes but stays in bed one morning, listening to birdsong and observing the sunlight. The tracks were recorded quickly, live in the studio to capture the raw intimacy and immediacy of Farmer’s live performances. The album’s 2021 precursor, The Quiet Drift, landed on Bandcamp’s Best Ambient list alongside the description “Drawing on the deep tones of drone, dream pop harmonies, and new age’s bright tranquility, Kenniff evokes the forests, lakes and rivers of her past and present surroundings with a zen patience.” Here on Places… she strides even further into reminiscence, seeking and commemorating the fondly tragic ache of half-remembered locales lost to time: A grandparent’s dim living room decorated in the tropes of a vague decade; a lonely clearing beside a trail we can’t be sure if we walked or just dreamt; the calming light of footage captured years before we were born though our feelings insist we were there with the actors on set.
