Castles In Space:

" Will Gardner’s debut album “Remains” is a recollection of his experience caring for his father through the late stages of Parkinson’s dementia.

It explores the darkness of the condition itself (the memory loss, the paranoias and disturbances) - alongside Will's own experience as a carer - the grief of losing a parent in slow motion, and what it means to grieve for someone who is still alive.

At the heart of the album are Will’s Dad’s diaries. Fragments of the text were used to derive the rhythms and melodies on which the album is built before the text was then removed so only the music remained.

Will has spent much of his musical life operating behind the scenes and moving between different roles as an arranger, conductor and pianist. He has contributed string arrangements to bands like alt-J, Daughter, hmltd and Låpsley and has orchestrated numerous film and TV scores - including Tin Star and BAFTA-nominated Blue Jean.

Remains, released via Castles in Space, is Will's debut album and first release as an artist in his own right. His work is influenced by his experiences working across a variety of musical genres - often combining processed, improvised piano; vocals and other instrumentation to create digitally transfigured contemporary classical soundscapes that explore the spaces between the abstract and the figurative."

I spent a lot of time experimenting with sequencing and different bits of hardware I'd acquired. I was also playing around with an old four track cassette recorder, which was loads of fun. I think the end result feels a little broader in sound and composition as all but one of these tracks were the result of recording a live jam down to a stereo mix. I recorded dozens of these until I'd found 'the one'.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThat way of capturing a performance really excites me, it's like a crystallised moment in time when the planets have aligned. When you're really absorbed into the flow of it and there's something extra guiding you.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThematically, it all reflects this ongoing interest I have in consciousnesses, spiritual enlightenment, truth realisation, whatever you want to call it. At the time I'd been reading a lot about advaita, which is Sanskrit for 'not two', or what western spiritual teachers call non-duality, where it's seen there is no separation between anything, no individual self, no subject and object, just this infinite eternal consciousness. I read a few of the classic\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e teachings from gurus such as Ramaana Maharishi, Jiddu Krishnamurti and Nisargadatta Maharaj, which reflect modern accounts of contemporary teachers like Richard Rose, Jan, Frazier and Rupert Spira.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThere seems to be this slow reconciliation between ancient eastern spiritual teachings and western psychology and neuroscience. I think the end result feels a little broader in sound and composition as all but one of these tracks were the result of recording a live jam down to a stereo mix.
